Three Chords and the Truth
By Ronnie Narmour firstname.lastname@example.org
Happy Fourth of July everybody! Hard to believe that this year is already half gone. 2012 is blazing by and that’s OK by me. I’m ready to get past this relentless summer heat and retreat to the comfortable months... you know, the ones with “r” in them. Ok, enough whining about the heat. We live in South Texas, grin and bear it. As usual I’ve got a ton of live music to tell you about. Let’s roll...
The “Surprise Band of the Week” goes to...
Clay McClinton played the Back Porch on June 28th.
Clay McClinton (Austin, TX) when he played the Back Porch last Thursday. But, actually I wasn’t all that surprised. After all, he is the son of Texas roadhouse legend, Delbert McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX). I would expect nothing less than a historically talented artist with that pedigree. This young man had a tow sack full of good, spirited songs, and an energetic real Texas sound with just the right mix of country, blues and rock with a no gimmicks, solid, tight band... not to mention he was one heck of a nice fellow, too. (By the way, I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but you can’t swing a cat around here without hitting a Ft. Worth musician or ex- pat. I know Clay must have felt right at home at the Porch, especially when he chatted it up with my friend Vanessa during the break. She was friends with his family years ago when Clay was just a kid. I’m surprised Lighthouse Rick wasn’t there.) BTW, the keyboard player (and I was unable to find out his name) was a stand- out. He had it going on with some fat, tasty Hammond B-3 layers. His contribution was strong and gave every song a big meaty sound. I really liked these guys. Let’s hope we get to see a lot more of them.
